C.A.F.O.D. is the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development which was started in 1962 as a direct result of the Second Vatican Council. It is the Church's response to the cry of the world's poor and it operates in 75 of the poorest countries where the projects combat hunger, disease, ignorance and suffering. When natural disasters occur, CAFOD combines its efforts with such organisations as Save the Children and Christian Aid.

Funds are always needed and this Parish aims to raise at least £10,000 each year by such means as individual donations, parish suppers, concerts, raffles, sponsored events etc., and the two big collections at Harvest time and Lent. CAFOD only spends 10p in every £ on administration leaving 90p to reach people in need. Funds are never channelled through governments but through known missionaries who, being on the spot, know the real needs. All projects are carefully monitored, and in this parish CAFOD figures are published every month and cheques forwarded six times annually.

Anyone willing to help in any way please contact the parish CAFOD by post telephone the Rectory - 01223 350787.

Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works

*    Are you concerned about social injustice ?

*    Do you feel strongly about issues of homelessness and poverty ?

*          Do you think that, as Christians, we should be trying to find practical ways of playing a part in tackling these problems ?

*          Do you think that we in the Church should be confronting the issues of Third World debt and the crippling poverty it has created in many countries ?

*    Does it matter to you that many, many people in the world are denied even the most basic of human rights ?

*    Would you like to be involved in raising your own awareness and that of the parish in these issues ?

If all or any of these are issues about which you are concerned, then why not come and join us in the Justice and Peace Group ?

Our commitment to Justice and Peace leads us to:

increase awareness of suffering in our community and in our world.

work to develop understanding of the causes of that suffering.

help build a more just and peaceful world.

The foundation of all we do is our Christian faith. We look to the Bible, the social teaching of the Catholic Church, and the example of just men and women for inspiration and guidance. As witnesses to justice and peace we seek to work with other Christians and groups locally and nationally. As a voice within the Church we strive to bring the demands of peace and justice to bear on all our activities and those of our parishes.

We are a friendly group who meet once every month to reflect on the spiritual basis of our commitment and on the issues of the day. We discuss plans for the activities arising from these reflections - these may be liturgical events, speaker meetings, fund-raising, campaigning, publicity events, etc. These meetings are for all the Catholic churches in Cambridge and at present attendance is divided fairly evenly between St. Philip Howard and Our Lady & the English Martyrs.

To find out more about the group please telephone one of the following members:

Bernard: 01223-240207

Clare: 01223-812248

Gill: 01223-211162

Tim: 01223-811676

Or simply come along to the next meeting in OLEM Parish Hall. We meet on the third Monday of every month at 7.45 pm. New members are always welcome.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul is an international, fraternal organisation of Catholic lay people who practice their Christianity by helping those in need on a person to person basis. The members meet weekly, firstly to support their efforts by prayer, and secondly to assess the needs of the poor in their particular area and how on a practical basis to meet that need. The Society encourages self-help projects. If anyone is interested in joining or learning more about the Society please contact OLEM, or visit SVP Website: http://home.btconnect.com/svpuk/
