A SUMMER SCHEDULE. It is essential that each of our priests have some leave during the summer. At times there will only be one or two priest resident at the Rectory and so a Summer Schedule of Weekday Mass times will be adopted for July and August. At OLEM Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 08.00 and on Tuesday at 08.00 and 18.15 (with Confessions at 17.30). There will not be a 12.15 on a Monday and Wednesday and no evening Mass on Thursday. Also at Our lady of Lourdes, Sawston there will be no weekday Masses in July.

ORDINATION: On Saturday 6th July at St. John the Baptist Cathedral at Noon, The Rev Henry Whisenant is being ordained priest. To allow all priests to attend, there will be no confessions or 10am Mass on that day at OLEM. It is proposed that we run a Coach (if sufficient numbers show interest). If you would like to attend please inform the parish secretary before the 15th June by e-mail: office@olem.org.uk

SOLEMNITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI: On Sunday 2nd June, Pope Francis has invited all Catholics around the world to spend some time with him that afternoon in adoring Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Here at OLEM at 14.30 we are responding to the Holy Father's request with a time of prayer and praise before our Eucharistic Lord culminating in an outdoor procession, returning to the Church for Benediction. Not only will this be a great act of Christian witness in this Year of Faith but also a time of celebration and thanksgiving for Our Lord's gift of Himself in the Sacrament of Love. Please make every effort to come, bring your friends and pray for good weather!

YEAR OF FAITH LECTURE 3: On Wednesday 5th June at 1930 in the church. Following hard on the heels of Fr. Gunter's thought provoking lecture on the Sacred Liturgy, we look forward to welcoming Fr. Alban McCoy OFM (Conv) Chaplain of Fisher House, and Dean Designate of St Edmund's College, who will speak on the document 'Gaudium et Spes' -the Church in the Modern World.

CHAPLAINCY FOR STUDENTS AT ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY AND OTHER STUDENTS WHO COME TO MASS AT OLEM: Sunday 26th May is the last Sunday of term so we will have a farewell party for students in the parish centre at 6pm to say goodbye for the summer and to those who are leaving Cambridge. Do come if you can.

SCHOOLS QUESTIONARE:

The Diocese would very much like to thank all those parents, parishioners and St Alban’s School staff who took the trouble to fill in our questionnaires on the need for primary school places in Cambridge. We received a total of 359 responses and these involved a total of 674 children. There is a lot of data analysis to do, but some initial headline data indicates:-

·         A strong desire for a new Catholic school in the Cambourne and Cherry Hinton areas. In the CB1 and CB23 postcode areas alone there are 94 children of pre-school age, all of whom (except one who’s only 2 weeks old), have been baptised and whose parents would like them to attend a Catholic school.

·         A high level of interest in extra places at St Alban’s, particularly in the CB1, CB2 and CB22 areas.

That there are 153 pre-school children included in the responses received. This shows that for each year between 2013 and 2017, there are at least around 30 pre-school children in the Cambridge area whose parents would like them to have a Catholic school place when they start school. We know there are more than this as not everyone with pre-school children filled in a questionnaire.

It was also evident from the comments made in the responses that transport is a real issue for many parents with particular concern expressed about the difficulty of travelling into the centre of Cambridge. This makes the need for school places close to where people live even more important.

The next steps include more analysis of the data, supplemented with further information from St Alban’s School and the St Philip Howard and OLEM parishes. The Diocese then intends to meet with Cambridgeshire County Council to discuss the main findings of the questionnaires. The aim is to submit a formal document to the Council in the next 6 months that they can consider in their discussions about the need for extra places in the Cambridge and surrounding area. We will keep you up-to-date on how things progress via parish and school newsletters.

PRAYER FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW BISHOP

Father,

Eternal Shepherd of your people,

you lead your Church with unfailing providence,

you guide and nourish your flock with steadfast love.

in your goodness grant to your Church of East Anglia

a holy, wise and gentle Shepherd

under whose watchful care we may grow in faith.

We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen

PARISH CENTRE: The Parish Centre Manager, Richard Peroni is on-site every weekday between 10.00—15.00, or otherwise by appointment. You can telephone him on 07760955324 or e-mail olempcm@yahoo.co.uk

MASS INTENTIONS. While we do our best to accommodate the Masses you request on the day and at the time specified it is not always possible especially on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation when the Parish Priest is obliged to offer one Mass “For the People of the Parish”. You will be reminded of this when you request a Mass for your intentions. It makes life a lot easier if any cheques for Mass offerings are made out to OLEM rather than to individual priests. It is a kind and generous thought on your part, but not how it works out in practice. Likewise requests for Masses are best handled through the parish office.

AGED 10-13? Like adventure? Got questions about faith? Visit www.yfaith.co.uk : the site that is written by young people for young people.
